Something for Jess

Something for Jess's owners Rob Campbell and Valentina Borin have steadily been adding their own touches since taking over in 2016, while keeping nods to the cafe's original design.

Campbell and Borin both come from artistic backgrounds and their playful style shines through in the revamped branding. Bright, pastel-coloured geometric shapes cover their takeaway coffee cups. While inside, mismatched furniture, colourful artworks and leafy greens occupy the space between the cornflower-blue walls. Two vintage ladders prop up mini blackboards announcing the ever-changing weekly specials.

That’s in addition to a small but oft-renewed gallery, which showcases rotating pieces by local artists; 10 per cent of proceeds from art sales are donated to charity. On Mondays, Campbell and Borin play music made exclusively by Sydneysiders, adding to the community feel.

The week-by-week menu focuses on whatever’s fresh and available at the markets. And while avocado toast is still a staple here, you might consider swapping it for the bruschetta featuring a range of toppings, from carrot and mustard purée, chilli-capsicum sauce to almond and orange-zest pesto, all served on textured plates.

Coffee is another priority. Melbourne’sDukes Coffee Roasterssupplies Something for Jess with a custom single origin, which is used across all its coffee offerings.
