The Cliff Dive

Walking down Oxford Street on a Friday night, it’s not unusual to see a crowd of twenty-somethings lined up outside a low-key door opposite the Riley Street intersection. They’re here for The Cliff Dive, a rowdy, tiki-tinged nightclub and bar from the group behindCantina OK!,Tio’s CerveceriaandBar Planet. But more than anything, they’re here for a good time.

The space is an old nightclub that’s been converted into a colourful, low-lit cavern inspired by Papua New Guinean dancehalls; decked out with a few tables, comfy booths and a load of Pacific Island kitsch. But after almost a decade, the sunken dancefloor is where it’s at. A weekly line-up of DJs spin R&B, techno and everything in between, and somehow the floorboards have withstood the test of time, sweat and tears.

Given the crew behind it, Cliff Dive kills it in the drinks department. Cocktails (and shots) are easy-drinking and fun, and you might order the Passionfruit Mojito, Raspberry Margarita or Long Island Iced Tea. The house signature is the Monkey Hat (Vodka, watermelon and jasmine), which comes served in a cute, monkey-faced vessel and goes for $5 before 9pm. Dive in.
